Graphing Continuous vs Discrete Functions

A continuous function allows the x-values to be ANY points in the interval, including fractions, decimals, and irrational values.
A discrete function allows the x-values to be only certain points in the interval, usually only integers or whole numbers.:

Graph the continuous function:
y = x2 for all Reals.

- New - 2. Graphs - Add Graph
• Enter the function into "f1(x) = ".

Notice that all of the visible points are connected with a continual drawing.

Graph the discrete function:
y = x2 for all Integers.

• It is not possible to graph a discrete function using f1(x).
- New - 4. Add Lists & Spreadsheets
• Type a name for the independent variable, such as "xValue" in the very top cell of column A (next to the A)
• Enter your x-values down the column..
• Type a name for the dependent variable, such as "yValue" in the very top cell of column B (next to the B)
• Enter your y-values down that column.
• Press and choose for Data & Statistics, .
• Click bottom horizontal axis, select xValue
• Click side vertical axis, select yValue

Notice that only the integer values are plotted. The points are NOT connected.
